Zyrtec Dosages Resource in Q&A
What dosage of Zyrtec should a 12 year old child be on? My daughter is 12 years old and weighs 130 pounds. What should her dosage be (mg). Just curious, because she is developing allergies and I take zyrtec for my allergies and was thinking about giving her half of a pill (5mg) to see if it helps.

Big Will replied: "At age 12 she can take a full dose of 10mg."

Muso_Gal replied: "I wouldn't give her any until you have spoken with you're doctor as you're daughter could be allergic to something in the Zyrtec tablets that you are not aware of."

MrsZ replied: "At 130 pounds she would be fine with a 10mg pill. I'd give it to her at night just in case it makes her drowsy. My 4 year old son is on 5mg of liquid Zyrtec, she can certainly tolerate 10mg., no problem."

Other than Strength, what's the difference between 5mg and 10mg Zyrtec? I don't know which dose I should start w/. I want to know if there is any difference between the 5mg and 10mg dosages of Zyrtec. (i know allready the strength is different and the pills are probably different colors too)...

lindyj2936 replied: "10 mg is the normal adult dose."

FlaChic replied: "10 mg is twice as much as 5 mg......DUH!"

ruby doo replied: "5mg is the typical starting dose for kids around age 6 and 10mg is the typical starting dose for adults. Overall, this medication is well tolerated but it does make about 10% of people who take it a little sleepy. This effect goes away after taking it for awhile. If you are an adult, I would recommend the 10mg starting dose."

Kristin C replied: "The usual starting dose for adults is 10 mg daily."

Jaded replied: "1 is a 12 hour pill and the other is a once a day dose. Some people cannot take a 24 hour pill because there allergies are much stronger and the meds start to wear off after a certain time so taking it in divided doses of 5 mg's gives them a little boost just when it is wearing off."

storeonwheels replied: "ask the pharmacist"

Shannon V replied: "you need to check with your doctor."

mystical s replied: "there is not a differance other than the strength the 10 mg will make you sleepy or at least it did me dont drive a car until you see how it is going to react on you after you get it in your system you should not feel sleepy anymore the 5 would be what I would go with for now if it doesnt do the job then you will have to move up to the 10 it is better to go with a less dose first so you will know what will be better for you and I hope you feel better soon love mystical"

joyce_41144 replied: "The 10mg is the normal dose for an adult. Why do you need to ask if the RX is for you? If not then you need to see a doctor to get your own RX."

sharrona replied: "It is double the strength...you always start with the lower dose first (5mg) then increase if the symptoms call for it. Check out Merck.com put in the med and see. good luck"

What is the dosage, by weight, of zyrtec for dogs? It is safe for dogs. My vet had told me we could move him to that after we got some of his other skin problems cleared up. That vet has recently closed and I have to wait a week to see the new vet. I just want him to be comfortable in the interim.

raregoldtx66 replied: "DONT give the dog zyrtec its not made for animals . Go talk to your vet or call them , you could kill it giving it human medication"

What is the correct dosage for an adult to take of Zyrtec Syrup? Zyrtec Medicine

Liz replied: "ZYRTEC Tablets, Chewable Tablets and Syrup ZYRTEC tablets and ZYRTEC Chewable Tablets come in two strengths: 5 mg and 10 mg. One teaspoon of ZYRTEC syrup is equal to a 5 mg ZYRTEC tablet. ZYRTEC can be taken with or without food. Be sure to take ZYRTEC exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Adults and children 12 years or older: Depending on the prescription, 5 mg or 10 mg of ZYRTEC may be taken once a day."

kaileighbaileigh replied: "cool! I take the same alergie med! 1 to 2 teaspoons full!"

Pls state the dosage amt for over the counter Zyrtec as available in Ireland.? In the US, Zyrtec is only available by doctor's prescription. I'll see my doctor tmrw and would like to request the same dosage of the medication that I had used while visiting Ireland. The size and shape of the pill was about that of a single grain of "long" rice. One pill was for twenty-four hours. Pls advise. Thank you!!

Devin C replied: "I am not quite sure what the dosage was in Ireland, but the recommended dosage for Zyrtec (certirizine) is 5-10 mg daily."

bob s replied: "comes in 5mg and 10mg (sound like the 5mg dose) if 5mg works for you, you should still try and get the 10mg and split the pills, it will save you money"

what is the lethal dosage of zyrtec? i'm not suicidle just i took about 5 zyrtec last night and it says to take no more than one...is that a lethal OD???

Gefilte Girl replied: "Since you're still alive, I'd have to say no."

Charlotte K replied: "Allergy tablets won't kill you, but they may damage your body. This dose isn't fatal, but it is highly inadvisable."

What would be the maximum doses if I am taking Singular and Zyrtec for allergies.? My trees were cut yesterday and today they cut the grass, my eyes are extremely red and itchy and runny nose. Want to increase my dosage.

Nedra E replied: "They give you dosages on your bottle. If you want to take more, you should talk to your doctor. You could also use an anti-allergy eye drop... there are some out there and that may help your eyes."

Marcus R. replied: "Do not increase the dosage of Singular, it was made for once every 24 hours and thats it. If you do take it more often you put yourself in danger of breathing spasms which I did and spent 9 hours in an emergency room where an Iron lung was being preped if I stopped breathing. Takee Benydryl which is an over the counter allegy drug."

thewebster_123 replied: "The maximum dose of Zyrtec and Singulair is 10 mg once a day. Instead of increasing you dose you might try taking Benadryl. That can safely be used with both Zyrtec and Singulair. If you have any nasal sprays now would be the time to start squirting! Good luck and hope you feel better!"

Harmony replied: "The maximum dose of both is 10 mg daily. Do not increase your dose without talking to your doctor. You could try an over the counter medication."

Zyrtec question? I developed an immunity to my old allergy medicine, allegra, so had to switch. My doctor perscribed zyrtec. I have been taking it for about a week. I have been late to work every day this week due to my inability to wake up. My doctor initially told me to take it before bed, so I've been moving the time of dosage back further and further to try and counteract the drowsiness. No luck. I've also been somewhat tempermental since I started taking it... like I punched the button to the elevator I was so pissed off this morning about being late again. I'm groggy all day and lose my train of thought half way through doing something. Luckily my boss has bad allergies too and understands I'm adjusting to a new medicine. I'm taking 10mg once a day. I'm 5'4'', slightly built and weigh 110. Could the dosage be too high for my metabolic rate? Has anyone else experienced the mood swings after taking this? I've been totally out of character since I started taking this.

tah_map replied: "I would say give your body a few more days to get used to it and see if the side effects subside. I took Zyrtec twice a day (for mastocytosis) for over a year and the only side effect I still had issues with was the drowsiness. If you're still having issues with side effects after being on it for 10 days to two weeks, I'd call your doctor. Some people just react differently to medication... and you may need to switch to a different brand."

littledevilinyourcup replied: "I noticed this with both of my kids (8 yr 45lb) and (11yr 68 lb) and found if I give it to them at noon they are not as groggy in the mornings. It took them about 2 weeks to get adjusted to it so give it a little more time."

C S replied: "Similar problem. I asked my doctor and had to be pre-approved to get my health coverage to pay for it, but I use the 12 hour Zyrtec and take it in the morning when I wake up. I wanted to be in more control of my allergies, in doing this, I don't have to take it all the time, and sometimes for short term, I will just take a benedryl to relieve the immediate symptom (like if I'm going to someones house that has indoor cats because my allergy is not that serious). Ask your doctor about getting the 12 hour Zyrtec instead of the 24 hour and good luck."

rhonda s replied: "My fiance had mood swings when he started taking Zyrtec. He was very irritable for a couple of weeks until he got used it it. But after he got thru that the medicine really works well for him. Good luck!"

What is the proper dosage of Anti-histamine and what are the side effect if taken daily? I am currently taking Zyrtec, Anti-histamine for my food allergy, I havent taken an allergy test so everytime i eat, I itch all over... I know i have to take allergy test but just answer my question! :p

J B replied: "Whatever it says on the side of the bottle is what you should be taking. Allergy medications are made to be taken every day. There should be very few side effects. Read the package insert for side effects."

Daniel-Kenneth U replied: "Allergy is caused by disbiosis in the gut. You probably need to consume organic yogurt and supplement with PROBIOTICS to restore the flora in the gut. Stay away from sugar. Be checked out for fungus."

patricia c replied: "depends on your age and weight.you have to know what food it is you are allergic too.not just take medicine because you think you know.start by stopping milk and milk products, then may be chocolate, strawberries, get an idea of what you are allergic to,i took testing and found out a lot,i have always eaten shrimp ,,I'm highly allergic,i still eat it ,i was trying to see my reaction none so far.oysters i never eat ,so there is no worry there.but roach droppings ??and cats? i work around roaches ,and i have a cat!my allergy shots are going good i have had them for a year now 2 shots every week!!now my maintenance dose is 2 shots every 2 weeks starting today!!2 shots because i have so many allergies that some of them won't mix, tree pollen and molds are bad.you will want testing if or when you wake up from sleep coking because your throat is swelling shut and the nearest emergency room is 20 min. away! so be care full with self medicating it can hide your real symptoms .analytic shock is nothing to laugh about."

cooker_upper1 replied: "Antihistamines and decongestants are very bad. Read the label-They will dry out your body causing gradual damage to organs and you will probably get a sinus infection as well. They only say "dry mouth" but it means dehydration-that's how they keep you from having an allergic reaction. Start keeping a record of what you eat and when you react. Go on a limited menu at first and add to it gradually. As you progress, you can find out what you are allergic to and stop eating that."

TnR replied: "Zyrtec is a once daily dose. It doesn't really have many side effects but could possibly make you very, very slightly drowsy. Start keeping a record of what you're eating. It's most likely not everything you eat but could be an ingredient in a lot of it."

what is zyrtec and how is it taken? how many milligrams does it come in. dosage for adult

dl_overdrive replied: "Zyrtec (cetirizine) is used to treat allergy symptoms such as sneezing, itching, watery eyes, or runny nose. Zyrtec is available in 5mg or 10 mg in pill forms. Use precautions in taking certain medications for allergy or sinsus especially for elderly people. If one is allergic to cetrizine, do not take zyrtec. More information is available at webmd.com and drugs.com. Hope this information clarifies what your question is asking. Best of luck to you."

Tin Can Sailor replied: "It is an antihistamine (Cetirizine HCI) 10mg per day."
