Does Lipitor cause muscle pain? I have been on Lipitor for about 2 years. About 2 months ago I developed muscle pain, worse in my legs in my legs but also in my trunk. I was taking the tablets at bedtime and the pain arrived about half an hour later, enough to keep me awake or to wake me up if i had got to sleep. I started taking neurofen and codeine at bedtime just to get off to sleep, but was woken with pain after about 3 hours. Then two weeks ago I stopped taking the Lipitor and the problem disappeared. Is this a familiar story to anyone else? I am wondering whether to stay off them altogether or to start taking half doses.

Cold Bird replied: "Yes, muscle pain is one side effect of Lipitor. Maybe you could discuss the options to it with your doctor?"

Rockford replied: "Yes, it can. It's a rare side effect listed on the prescribing information. It's not normal muscle pain either. There is a special name for it, Myositis. I think can progress to muscle weakness. Tell your doctor."

Dr. Albert, DDS replied: "YES,SEE: Lipitor, a statin drug widely used to lower cholesterol, has been implicated in a number of cases involving muscle pain and muscle tissue degeneration. Understanding the effect that Lipitor has on the body may provide answers for those concerned about the side effects associated with this medication. It may also lead the way to alternative cholesterol treatments. The active ingredient in Lipitor is atorvastatin, a drug that inhibits the production of an enzyme that the body uses to make cholesterol. The intention is good, but there are problems inherent in reducing the production of cholesterol in the body. Cholesterol plays a vital role for every cell in the body. Without enough of it, the body cannot repair and replace cell membranes, and they will degenerate and die. Muscle tissue, like every other kind of tissue, needs a certain amount of cholesterol in order to stay healthy and function properly. The use of Lipitor may actually restrict cholesterol too much, causing muscle aches and pain due to tissue degeneration. Much about the full effect of statin drugs on the body remains unknown; however, it is clear that they should be used with caution, and only when other avenues have been exhausted. Unicity International, a leader in the field of nutrition, believes that a better solution to the problem of high cholesterol is a natural one. They offer an all-natural product proven to lower cholesterol without harmful side effects. Bios Life 2 is a liquid fiber supplement that removes excess cholesterol without interfering with the body's cholesterol producing mechanisms. The addition of antioxidant vitamins C and E, and a highly absorbable form of chromium, makes this formula the most complete natural cholesterol-lowering supplement on the market today."

Muscle pain from Lipitor? Would like to know the recommendations (Natural if possible) to solve cholesterol problem without taking statin drugs. My age is 68

mako replied: "If you have problem with high cholestrol, you have to take your medicine faithfully. For the medicine will control your cholestrol level. You also need to check its level often to see whether the medicine actually can control it or not. Its isn't any good for you to just take this medicine when it cannot control the high level. Please don't stop taking your medicine. Its just a tiny pill, very easy to swallow. There is the apple cider vinegar with honey where you drink it every day, it helps. You can check it up in the internet."

Sylvia C replied: "Statin drugs are notorious for causing severe leg pain just one of their side effects. You can change drugs and you'll find out they carrry severe side effects but then again they lower cholesterol. Its a chance we take when we take any type of drugs. Natural remedies: Onion juice 1 glass per day., mud pack smoothed over the abdomen increasing productivity of intestines and kidneys. Coriander water. Soy products. Exercise. Oat bran. Just some of the one I have tried and they do work, it just involves alot of time and patience rather than popping 1 or 2 pills in your mouth. I myself would rather go the natural remedy to prevent the dangerous side effects of cholesterol medication."

alice f replied: "Eating more fiber in your diet is helpful. Eat bran cereal for breakfast instead of bacon and eggs. Avoid processed foods. Eat oatmeal. Eat bran or wheat bread instead of white bread. Avoid margarine with high cholesterol content. Read labels carefully. Cook more with herbs instead of traditional bacon drippings etc. I had lots of muscle pains and have multiple zocor prescription on my shelf because I was fearful of the muscle pains. After I started walking two miles a day I experienced fewer pains and less joint stiffness. My doctor put me on simvastin generic zocor and thankfully I do not have muscle pains. My chlosterol dropped almost 100 points with increased exercise, diet modification and simvastin. I am so surprised and delighted."

is there a statin that does not cause muscle pain? I took myself off Lipitor after 18 months as I developed muscle pain severe enough to wake me in the night. Do all statins have this side effect or are there some that don't? I do know that ideally it should be my GP that I ask. However, I live in a rural area and I am stuck with a GP who: a) examined me for PR bleeding and told me it was "nothing to worry about" 5 days before I had half my cancerous colon removed b) didn't monitor my electrolytes balance when I was on diuretics so I spent 2 weeks in a cardiac unit when I collapsed from potassium deficiency c) spent 3 days telling me my 7 year old son did not have appendicitis, following which I took him to casualty where he was admitted immediately for perforated appendix. In these circumstances I want to be as informed as possible BEFORE I see my GP

Marcus replied: "The best and most natural way to reduce cholesterol is to eat porridge made from oats and soya milk. Both have great cholesterol busting properties. Taking Garlic capsules will also help."

sky replied: "If you have an adverse reaction to your medication then it's your GP you should be talking to for advice not anyone on here.."

bones replied: "Most statins work generally in the same way and cause muscle pain in sensitive individuals. Your doctor should be able to change your cholesterol lowering drugs to another class which may have less side effects."

pax949 replied: "After reading the write up in the Daily Mail, I have now stopped taking my statin. Mine caused sleeplessness, headaches etc. The Lancet are now saying that statins only benefit men under a certain age and have no benefits at all for women. I am now looking to lower my cholesterol with diet i.e. porridge, almonds, fruit and veg, red wine, garlic and exercise. Also try to grill meats and if you have to use the fryingpan, use a spray oil or olive oil. I think Doctors are gradually waking up to the fact that statins are being pushed by the big drug companies as they make them milllions each year yet it is being proven that statins do not stop heart attacks and strokes. Good Luck"

If a med can cause general muscle pain/weakness could it cause that pain in the heart too? Say a med like Lipitor?

David D replied: "The myositis that meds like Lipitor sometimes cause does not affect heart muscle, but there are some rare diseases like infection with Toxoplasma that will attack both skeletal and cardiac muscle. Skeletal and cardiac muscle are both striated, so they are more like each other than they are like smooth muscle, but there are differences between them. Only a few diseases attack them both."

rwa000 replied: "I am sorry to disagree with the doc , but a muscle is a muscle heart or otherwise, statins have made me so tired and my hear much weaker,"

How can I help severe upper-back pain? My fiance developed severe upper-back pain yesterday. It came out of nowhere and he wasn't lifting anything. He does take Lipitor for cholesterol and I know that one of the side effects are muscle pains/spasms. He's been taking Lipitor for almost a year now and this is the first time that he's experiencing pain like this. We went to the doctor and he gave us an anti-inflammatory called Neproxin. He took 1 pill about 4 hours ago and still see's no difference in the pain. You arent supposed to take aspirin with this medication, but would it be okay to take advil or tylenol? He can barely move his head, he's having trouble getting in a comfortable position to sleep and anytime I try to rub his back, he says that the pain is unbearable. Are there any other way's that I can help him feel better at home? sorry, I forgot to mention that he did stop taking the Lipitor as soon as he developed the back pain.

Te replied: "I would give the medicine a few more days to get into his system. If it doesn't kick in, call your doctor. In the meantime, I would recommend hot compresses. They will ease the pain."

Mom's leg pain (muscle or blood vessel);Stain use, read on:? My Mom's been taking Lipitor approx. 2 + ? yrs; she's now been hurting in her left leg, down below knees; she's not sure if it's muscle or blood vessel that's hurting ,pretty bad & frequently. My sister are her care-givers (as they live near her); I help with her sometimes, as much as I can. They have to take her to Doc every wk. or two - for her diabetes too low/ and / or too high. She's been complaining about the leg pain off & on for past several weeks. Do u think her pain could be in muscle due to rare side effect of the Lipitor (that disease/ ailment that starts with an R , i think, --the one that causes muscle-breakdown and then kidney damage! I don't know if she nor sis already informed Doc of her pain in leg. my question: would Mom be running a fever if she does have that rare side effect? / thus far, my sisters &Bro.-- do not live with Mom&Dad,but go by&give her insulin&meds.,&other chores Is theRare sideEffect diagnosed by blood Tests(by her Doc)? any help/comment.

the crusader replied: "If she's been taking the Lipitor for more than 2 years without incident, than it most likely isn't from the Lipitor. However, her doctor will make the decision to take her off of it or not. The leg pain could be caused by Neuropathy, which is common in diabetics, especially since it seems like your mom's diabetes isn't really under control (here sugar isn't stable). The most important thing is for your mom to get to her doctor ASAP! (p.s. the "R" disease from the statins is called Rhabdomyolysis)"

Orv replied: "The most likely cause of her leg pain is peripheral neuropathy--nerve damage--caused by her diabetes. She is likely getting pains--ranging from sharp stabbing like pains to generalized aches in her feet as well. The nerve damage results from poorly controlled diabetes but eventually affects most diabetics. Regardless of the cause, she should inform her doctor about it. There are a number of fairly effective treatments."

DoxieMom1992 replied: "I'm not sure of the side effects of Lipitor, or how long it would take for them to show up. Some medications take awhile to reach there peak effectiveness because they are slow acting. It is possible it could be the Lipitor. However, if your mother has poorly controlled blood sugar levels it is highly likely the pain she is experiencing is related to her diabetes. Diabetics often get nerve damage in their lower extremities. This is known as diabetic neuropathy. Also, if your mother is not very active, she could be developing blood clots in her legs, commonly known as DVT or deep vein thrombosis. Please make sure her doctor is aware of her leg pain. It could be very serious."

Fluffy Ewe replied: "I have the same question on Statins!! read here for more info on some of the lessor known side effects of Statins: This doctor was with NASA. I heard him speak on Statins last week."

Was on Lipitor 20 mg tabs for 90 days= muscle problems, loss of period (amenorrhea) . . .any info on this? Having many, many adverse reactions to taking this medication. I have tried repeatedly to contact the Dr and keep getting voice mail so no appt made yet or contact with them yet - just playing phone tag. So I quit taking it two days ago due to concern caused by my loss of periods for several months (I have been abstinant for at least a year-so not pregnant), severe dry skin, eczema, Seborrheic dermatitis(bad dandruff), graying hair, severe dry mouth, insomnia, loss of appetite, muscle pain, weakness, cramps all over, fatigue, stiffness, cramping - especially in lower legs, stiff neck, mood reactions and dry mouth also. I am a 38 yr old female born 02-11-1968, I was healthy other than a very high herditary LDL level and 50 pounds over my ideal weight and hypothyroidism (on synthroid and at good TSH levels though) when put on this drug several months ago and doubt the benefits can be worth how awful life has become while on this medication. Anyone have any info or input on this at all?

prettyfreek15 replied: "Consult your doctor because he will probably take you off of that medication."

Panacea replied: "Stop taking that drug immediately until you are able to consult with a doctor. Statin drugs have a rare, but life threatening side effect that has those as initial symptoms (muscle cramping etc.)"

Ladybug replied: "My mother was on Lipitor. She started taking flax oil; she started with 1 teaspoon a day & gradually increased to 1 tablespoon a day. She was able to get off all high blood pressure and cholesteral meds. Make sure it's fresh & refridgerated."

medhelp replied: "There are alternatives to this that have no side effects and work as good or better, but do not count on your doctor to be knowledgeable about this. The pharmaceutical companies have a big influence on the training of doctors. If they have not been shown alternatives and how they work they will just give the company line. With these side effects you should not be taking statin drugs. To counteract some of the effects you are having take Co Q-10 this is what cholesterol drugs deplete."

sandras77 replied: "im on liptor 20 mg. not overweight im 5 2 and weigh 130..my dad is slender and he has the same problem with zocor. im taking liptor 20 mg. but if it hurts me like it did before im quiting it too."

Diana replied: "See your doctor, stay off the meds with that many side effects and try something natural"

sanrews replied: "I have been on a daily dose of 40mg Lipitor for 8 years with no problems other than erectile. But then I guess I'm just lucky."

alterntives to lipitor? My mother had to quit taking lipitor due to muscle pain. What are some natural alternatives to lipitor? She has seen a doc. They put her on some more meds and she had a reaction to that. She won't go back to the doctor now, but she wants to try natural alt. That's why I asked.

AVA B replied: "no see a doc"

dragonflayme71 replied: "She should continue seeing her doctor, or find another one. They will keep working with her to find the right medication. She should also be seriously watching her diet. Foods are labeled as to how much fat and cholesterol are in them. Avoid high cholesterol and all saturated and trans fats. High fiber content is good as well."

JustMe replied: "Along with proper diet and exercise, the following all natural supplements are very effective. Cholesterol Regulating Complex: to reduce cholesterol Garlic Complex: prevents clotting; dilates small blood vessels; dissolves fatty deposits and thins blood Optiflora: helps normalize blood lipids Lecithin: converts serum cholesterol to good HDL Extra Soy Protein: clinically tested to aid in cholesterol reduction. Hope this is helpful and feel free to contact me with questions or if you are interested in the brand I take."

IRA J replied: "I had the same problem -- muscle pain -- known medically as Rhabdomyolisis. I stopped take all statin drugs, of which Lipitor is only one -- and instead have been taking a supplement called CHOLECTIN. It is put out by BCH -- Biocentric Health, Inc. You can look it up online by doing a Yahoo Search."

kewlnchilled replied: "Hi! Try using RED YEAST RICE, it helps lower cholesterol and works like other statin drugs and doesn't have severe side effects Caution: it does lower the COQ10 levels in are body , so the best way to take it is with a COQ10 supplement Go to a natural health store and try talking to them, or better yet a NUTRITIONIST, they will be able to recommend the right dosage. It works and is not harsh on the body All the best :)"
