how long does it take to get rid of tinea versacolor when taking Ketoconazole? What are the details of the skin condition and the drug?

Amy replied: "Tinea versicolor is a common fungal infection that often affects adolescents and young adults. The term versicolor refers to the fact that it causes the affected skin to change color and become either lighter or darker than surrounding skin. The most common areas it affects are the shoulders, back, and chest. At times, it can affect folds of skin, such as the crook of the arm, the skin under the breasts, or the groin. The face is usually spared, although sometimes children can get it there. There may be just a few spots or so many that it gives the appearance that the affected skin is normal while the unaffected skin around it seems to have a problem. TREATMENT: There are many antifungal agents available to apply to the skin for the treatment of tinea versicolor. Over-the-counter (OTC) remedies include clotrimazole and miconazole. These should be applied twice a day for 10-14 days but come in small tubes and are hard to apply to large areas. Another OTC option is selenium sulfide shampoo 1% (Selsun Blue) or 1% ketoconazole shampoo. Some doctors recommend applying these for 15 minutes twice a week for two to four weeks. Others suggest applying them overnight and washing them off in the morning for a week. This treatment can be irritating, however, and may lead to missing hard-to-reach spots on the mid-back. There are also many prescription-strength antifungal creams that can treat tinea versicolor, as well as a stronger form of selenium sulfide (2.5%) and prescription-strength ketoconazole shampoo (2%). However, these pose the same application problems as their OTC counterparts. Oral treatment for tinea versicolor has the advantage of simplicity. A single dose of ketoconazole (brand name Nizoral) or five daily doses of itraconazole (brand name Sporanox) are two therapies your doctor can prescribe. The affects of the fungal infection can be seen for months after successful treatment. you should be eradicated of the infection within the time you cease taking your perscribed medicine. Good Luck!!"

perla replied: "No matter what you treat it with, the skin doesn't appear normal for a long time. The spots seem to take forever to go back to normal skin color, like maybe 6-8 weeks."

is it ok to not wash off ketoconazole shampoo on skin? (for tinea versicolor)? i've been using ketoconazole shampoo since yesterday for my tine versicolor on my abdominal area. i use it like a lotion over the area. i dont wash it off and leave it overnight believing that it will be more effective that way. is that ok or will it cause irritation in the long run? another thing, how long would it take to see results? does the discoloration go away easily? its summer here and i can't wear bikinis!!!

Pegasus90 replied: "Don't know about the effects of the ketoconazole shampoo used as a lotion. I believe it is an anti-fungal and I believe that tinea versicolor is due to the fungus candida albicans. I would suggest learning more about candida and what foods you can eat to assist the shampoo. Yogurt is one. There is info about candida albicans at the yeast link at."

Donna replied: "Ketoconazole (Nizoral is one commercial name) is basically anti fungal. I was given it for a yeast infection I incurred in a hospital stay years ago. (Ya gotta love hospitals.) Now I use it as a prescribed topical 2.5% cream and shampoo for a chronic facial dermatitis condition. First, all circumstances are different. I use my shampoo every other day as a shampoo, and the cream twice daily on my face, every other day. Using a shampoo as a cream sounds like self-medication, especially since you have so many questions. My symptoms cleared in about a week, but I must maintain the regimen. In my case, prolonged use of a penetrating cream has had no side effects over years. Your shampoo may be an over the counter item (Is it bright red like mine?), but the dermatologist told me to leave the suds in place 5 minutes and rinse well--every other day. I think you need to talk to the pharmacist at a minimum."

will 1% ketoconazole OTC nizoral shampoo cure my tinea versicolor? i don't want to take the pill as it's bad for your liver. i know you can get the doc to prescribe you 2% ketoconazole cream but i'm just wondering if 1% will do the trick instead? going to the doc requires copay, waiting, being around sick people, etc and nizoral is $15 at target. i also have bad dandruff and know the 1% works well but the 2% can't even be used in my hair anyway since it's a cream. so i may wind up getting both anyway...help?

Yes I Know replied: "try it."

Does anyone know an effective way of treating Tinea Versicolor? I have moved to NZ and then Australia 7 years ago and because at that time I did not have my own washing machine I was affected by the skin infection Tinea Versicolor). I got worse during my pregnancy and now about 1 year after That i am trying everything to get rid of it and I can not.It is driving me mad. especially in hot summer in Canberra. I really do not know what I can do to have it treated for ever. It seems it is not responding to any thing.I have tried all antifugal creams, selenium sulphate shampoo and fluconazole tablets and ketoconazole shampoos...nothing is working. I am applying anti fungal liquids to the washing machin and boiling clothes but hopelss..It is about a year since I was affected by it very badly and nothing works.would you please if anyone had it treated tell me what i can do?

fruit.nevermore replied: "Are you SURE it's tinea? Many autoimmune and allergic conditions such as eczema will mimic the symptoms of fungal skin infections. If you're having this problem you should go to the doctor and request they do a culture to see if there really IS an organism present. They can probably also do succeptibility tests to see what will kill it. If the culture comes back negative you probably need something like cortisone instead of antifungals! If it is a fungal infection and nothing works you can try rubbing it with boric acid in water (saturated solution), and also salicylic acid. However if the treatments you've already tried showed NO improvement at all it's probably not fungal. If it is a fungus you should have at least seen some sort of change with treatment, even if it didn't go away."

tlbrown42000 replied: "As a healthcare provider I know that tinea versicolor is difficult to resolve. It appears that you have tried all the usual treatments. All the medical books state just what you have observed. Its difficult if not impossible to rid this totally. The medication that you take by mouth is usually the most effective....but it is hard on the liver so you have to limit the use. I don't believe that boiling your clothes will do anything but wear out your clothes...and cleaning the washing machine isn't going to help your condition either. Hot and humid environments make it worse....like any fungal conditions. I wish I could help...it's not invented yet."

ROSEMARY S replied: "The only thing that worked for me was Nizoral cream. It got rid of it within a couple of weeks and it has never returned even after stopping use. I know you've used antifunglas before, but that's all I got."

Ding-Ding replied: "According to this website: Tinea Versicolor is present in all adult skin. Heat and humidity can make it worse. Read through the site. If you have taken various medications to clear it up and it hasn't gone away, it could be that your immune system is out of wack. Many medications can affect the liver negatively. Some medications also are disruptive to the immune system. I would suggest you get plenty of rest, take a good multi-vitamin and drink plenty of fluids. Many herbal teas flush the body of toxins. Try to build up your immune system. Stress can also affect your immune system negatively. Cortisol and other hormonal stressors can damage your immune system. Check in with your physician and see if he thinks it is alright to try herbal remedies. But take care, if you continue to take the meds you are on, you could have serious consequences with just starting up with herbs. Again, have a talk with your doctor. Good luck, hope this helps."

I have had Tinea Versicolor for years. Any suggestions as to how to get rid of it? I have been using Selenium Sulfide off and on for years. My doctor had me on a regement of Ketoconazole. I've tried Nizoral. It's mostly on my shoulders and chest. When it's warm out, it creeps up my neck and itches something fierce. Help!

Stephen replied: "you may need to take oral fluconazole for an extended period of time"

my tinea versicolor discoloration is not going away! what to do? i have been treating my tinea versicolor with ketoconazole shampoo for a month now. still i have those ugly brown colored blotches. when do i see results? how do i know that i've successfully treated tinea versicolor?

traceytwentyseven replied: "there is a pill you can use same name as shampoo you have to sweat it out of your system so when you take it wait 20 min then expercise for half hour."

Question for someone who knows alot about drug interactions? I am taking Ketoconazole for Tinea versacolor. I took a Xanax today to calm down. Well... AFTERWARDS, I read that the two is a major drug interaction. It says something about interpatient variability. What does interpatient variability mean? PLEASE help.

Nurse Tiffy replied: "Ketoconazole significantly increase the plasma concentrations and pharmacologic effects of Benzos (Xanax) that are primarily metabolized by CYP450 3A4. There for when you take a 0.25mg tab it may effect you as if took a 1mg tab or more. You should ask your doctor for to prescribe lorazepam or temazepam, neither one of these benzos are metabolized by CYP450 3A4."

sleepycatz1972 replied: "what it means is that the Nizoral (ketoconazole) may stop your body from metabolizing & clearing out the xanax correctly. this can, in turn, make the levels of xanax higher in your system than is safe for you...almost as if your dosage was jacked up all of a sudden. interpatient variability refers to the extent of the drug absorption. it may vary greatly among patients. what happens to one person may be different than what happens to another, so you can't really go by someone else's response to the drug interaction. it has too wide a range to predict exactly what would happen. one can never be too safe with drug interactions. i'd suggest getting a hold of your doc toask their advice. your doc may want to see you or change your meds to better suit your needs."

Joseph replied: "It is best to interpret it by reading about both in either rxlist or wikepedia. If you were not advised of these drug interactions, it is usually included with the drugs in a pamphlet, the pharmacist also has the information. Some have had some bad reactions sometimes somewhere. Or something like it. I did take both together and was ok."

How to get rid of tinea versicolor FAST?? HELP!!!? Over the last 2 months I've developed (what my doctor has confirmed) to be tinea versicolor all over my upper arms. It started slow and all of a sudden the spots got bigger and eventually joined into bigger spots. I have a feeling I got it from a tanning bed. I started using selsun blue every day for the past 2 weeks and also for the past few weeks I've been taking daily doses of ketoconazole (oral nizoral), now as I've been told it can take months for the skin color/pigment to come back, but it just seems like every day its getting worse. Does anyone know of anything that works better and FASTER? i'm desperate, its so bad that I can't even show my arms and have been forced to wear shirts that cover it up. I'd appreciate any advice or reassurance from anyone that knows about this!

mompoo replied: "http://www.aocd.org/skin/dermatologic_diseases/tinea_versicolor.html Good Luck"

melmo33 replied: "I shelled out the money and did a few sets of mystic tanner. Since it is topical and works more as a covering and doesn't actually make your pigments change, it hide (but did not totally cover) my spots. The doctor gave me a active sulfur cream. It was horrible and black and smelled and you have to leave it on for 20 minutes 2x daily, but mine went away in about a month, which is a lot better than the several months that website says."

I have just been diagnosed with Tinea Versicolor have a few questions...? I have been taking KETOCONAZOLE 10 pills at a time everyday just 1 pill and put selson blue shampoo on my skin I have white spots on my back, arms and a few on my chest how long does this take to go away?? How common is this in Canada?

Susiecat replied: "Usually this fungal skin disorder happens in more milder and warm climates. However, since you do have this disorder, the medication you are on is one that has proven effective to treat this skin problem. This condition can be kind of chronic and does not disappear right away. The yeast infection can be cured but it can take months for the skin to regain its normal appearance. You should avoid putting oily products to your skin Avoid sun exposure because this can make this skin disorder more apparent. Dont wear tight clothes - Your skin will eventually return to its normal appearance but it will take time. Unfortunately, this condition tends to reoccur so it is best to keep in touch with your dermatologist whenever you have a reoccurence."

Where can I get prescription Ketoconazole w/out a prescription? I have tinea versicolor and have used the Ketoconazole cream to try to get rid of it, but it didn't help. I want to try the 200 mg pills, but I don't want to pay for the visit to the dermatologist which would be about $50, plus the price of the prescription. Since I already know what I need, I'd rather just order the pill if that is at all possible. I called the dermatologist to see if they could just write me a prescription for the pill since I had been in already for the tinea versicolor and they said that it had been to long and that I would have to come in again. If anybody knows any way for me to get around this, any information would be beneficial. Thank you for your time!
