Keflex In Pregnancy Facts in Q&A
Is 500mg Flagyl and also is Keflex safe to use during pregnancy? The ER doc prescribed them to my wife today. She has a couple of infections. She is 29 weeks pregnant. Is a 500mg dose of Flagyl safe to take twice a day? Is it is safe to use keflex at the same time?

pinkymachiney replied: "I'm not sure myself but I find it really helpful, with questions like these, to call a pharmacist. Any pharmacy and many grocery stores have pharmacies and if you call and ask for the pharmacist (you don't want an assistant) they will be able to give you the answers you need. If you don't get a good one the first time, try a different pharmacy. This is their area of specialty and I've found them really good. Good luck!"

sweetrelease82 replied: "Hmmm.... I'm not sure about how they work together, but here are two sites about the drugs themselves."

Due 09/10/09 ! :) replied: "Keflex is fine and so is Flagyl. I have took them both. Not at the same time though but as a doctor perscribed them im sure they wouldnt do so if it wasnt safe. call your ob if youre scared"

Is Keflex safe to take during pregnancy? I hav urinary tract infection and im 4 weeks pregnant. I have been advised to take Keflex. But because im so weary of antibiotics, has anyone taken Kelfex during pregnancy as a treatment for UTI? and has it affected their baby in anyway? I just want to be 200% sure it is safe to take before taking it. I have read on websites that it hasnt been tested on pregnant women however it is safe to use during pregnancy, which makes me still scared to take it. any help is greatly appreciated I have tried cranberry juice thing now for 2 weeks and have been taking ural which is an over the counter drug but they say it is very safe for pregnancy, however it has not worked to fully get rid of it, I also have asked what will harm the baby more and it was said that leaving it untreated as it can cause miscarriage

randgholder replied: "I was hospitalized at 24 weeks because of an under developed kidney. I have to be on antibiotics from now on and I am on Keflex. It is perfectly safe and does not pass the placenta."

mcdannells replied: "You are very smart to be leary of drugs while pregnant. You will make a great mom! You are already! I personally would stay away from all drugs specially if it has not been tested on women who are pregnant. Each pregnancy is different. There is no one answer fits all in this situation....one thing to ask the doctor is, which would hurt the baby more. Taking this drug or having the infection...why not do the cranberry juice thing, not the cranberry cocktail...."

LaRae L replied: "it is approved by the FDA to be safe for pregnant women. if your doctor knows you are pregnant i highly doubt he would prescribe something to you without telling you it may be harmful. he'd have a liability on his case if he did that imo."

Cmom22030 replied: "I was on antibiotics for most of my pregnancy, and any doctor will tell you most of them are safe. It just depends on any allergies you have wether or not they are safe for you."

Being on Cephalexin Generic for Keflex during pregnancy.? Has anyone been prescribed that by their doctor and experienced diarrhea? What are some cures to get rid of diarrhea?

Shieldgambit replied: "usually it is an osmotic diarrhea take it with food call your doctor"

Kiley replied: "Diarrhea is one of the side effects if keflex and cephalexin in the first place. I would call your doctor and tell him what is going on so that he can switch your antibiotic. You do not want to dehydrate yourself when pregnant."

Has anyone been prescribed Keflex 500 mg during pregnancy? I was prescribed this antibiotic for an infection from a previous root canal. I know that an infection can be bad for baby but I am so skeptical about taking this medication during my last trimester even though it was approved by my OB and dentist today. I am 32 weeks prego.

babydoc38 replied: "I'm only 9 weeks along and I was just prescribed this for a bladder infection. I think we are safe!"

Melissa S replied: "I have only taken zithromax(also for a tooth infection). If your dentist and ob said it's safe it should be fine. Anything category A or B is generally ok to use during pregnancy. Cephalexin(keflex) is in the FDA pregnancy category B. This means that it is not expected to be harmful to an unborn baby. --d00096a1.html"

pink25 replied: "Look up the information on WebMD, my husband was prescribed this and that site was the one to let me know that he had a severe allergic reation to it. I highly recommend looking it up and it was super is to."

mystic_eye_cda replied: "In general I stick to old antibiotics. There is way more research and decades of women taking things like amoxicillian. And the few times I have take "new" antibiotics they haven't worked as well. Fetal Risk * No fetal adverse effects in animals. * Crosses human placenta. * No adequate human data but suggested possible associaition with cardiovascular defects and oral clefts in first trimester exposure."

gemma b replied: "I have for Kidney infection in 2 pregancies all mine are fine"

Has anyone taken Keflex (Cephalexin) in pregnancy? I woke one day, had a normal wee, literally 5 mins later i needed to go again only to wee 2 drops and it was reddish (blood). It happened another 2 times and it stung too. My GP surgery told me to come in an do a urine sample, which I did, and the nurse at the surgery checked and said I had a UTI & prescribed Keflex-500mg, 1 tablet 3 times a day for 5 days.As I was 14wks pregnant, thought I'd better take them.6 days later I phoned surgery again to see what the lab found in the tests they did and the report came back that there are no cultures present in the urine at all!! the nurse at surgery must've assumed UTI as there was little blood in it. So that means I took Keflex for NO APPARENT reason!! Im angry. my question - have any mums out there had a healthy baby since taking Keflex in pregnancy? Have you noticed any particular 'defects' or health problems in baby?? I feel like I have poisoned baby in womb! All because the surgery used a 'dipstick' in my wee before sending to lab.

alexis73102 replied: "I was on Keflex for over 2 weeks in June due to a cyst that needed drained/packed and was infected. I was on 4 pills a day and I think they were 250mg each. They caused a yeast infection so my dr let me lower my dose for a few days. My OB approved the Keflex prescription and its actually one of the few antibiotics that are on the pregnancy safe list."

Anne F replied: "Relax.. I had to take that exact medication but more frequently with three of my children and they all came out perfectly healthy and happy. It will not cause any harm to your little one. But I know you must be really mad at the staff there. Good luck and the baby will be just fine. Congrats and I am glad there wasn't anything serious wrong."

jhharris2287 replied: "i took it while pregnant but it gave me reallllly bad stomach cramps so i had to stop taking it. ob said it was fine for baby though....i think i may have just been allergic."

Pregnancy and Keflex reaction? they just gave me keflex for a uti yesterday and today i am having skin peel ALOT on my face, i am also getting some red bumps. i called the doctor and she said to get benidryl (sp) i know that this medicine can cause burning under the skin and if it does it is life threating , how does the doctor know thats not what this is? the main sign is peeling skin im really worried but my husband seems to think im over reacting and will not take me to the er, suggestions

dejavu replied: "if you feel you need to go to the er get yourself there and don't rely on him taking you. do what was suggested and see if there is any improvement. but if not or you still are freaking out go. or get in to see your dr. (today is sunday, if they are closed is there an urgent care you can go to) if you can't get to an urgent care or an appointment in leiu of the er then go. if you feel you have a medical emergency then go. don't feel bad for wanting to get checked out.....but be calm and go."

Danielle S replied: "okay to take benedryl to stop the reaction, but i would stop the medication if your getting a rash. Call your doc and tell her that you are not comfortable with taking the medication and would like something else. Your not overracting an allergic reaction can be serious if you continue to use whatever is causing it. It may not cause harm now, but if you use it again in the future it can be very serious reaction. good luck"

Would having antibiotics in my system cause a false postive on a pregnancy test? I've taken amoxicillin for 10 days and keflex for about four days. I took two pregnancy tests yesterday and am wondering if these medications could cause a false positive?

MasonMom06 replied: "Not likely, but if you are on birth control, it can definetly interfere with that."

mommyof1 replied: "Nothing should cause a positive except HCG which is only found once the baby has implanted into the uterus. Good Luck."

butterfliesformom replied: "No they would not cause a false positive. 99% of the time if you have a positve pregnancy result you are pregnant. More often you see a false negative when you are infact pregnant. If you are concerned that the test is wrong, make an appt with your dr and ask for a blood pregnancy test. They are more accurate."

jessw931 replied: "if you were on birth control and taking antibiotics then you are more than likely pregnant!!!! my doctor didn't tell me this would happen but antibiotics decrease the affects of birth control so you are Mir likely to get pregnant!! it happened to me!"

Jackie M replied: "unless you were taking hormones to help you get pregnant, there are no antibiotics or medications that will give you a false positive."

crystald replied: "no, the test is for the pregnancy hormone, not a drug test to test for antibiotics. if it sais positive, honey your pregnant!"

. .Pregnant EDD Thanksgiving Day replied: "I doubt that antibiotics can mimic the presence of the pregnancy hormone in your body. It is possible to get a false negative, maybe, but I even doubt that. Stop the meds and get a pregnancy blood test or switch to a baby-safe med...Your prescribing doctor will know what to do. Good luck and congratulations!"

elainevdb replied: "Absolutely not. Birth Control pills can't even cause a false positive. The only reason you'll show a false positive (all things being equal) is if you took medication with the pregnancy hormone HCG in it (fertility drugs) or if you just had a miscarriage. Otherwise, those things are fairly accurate."

is it safe to be on amoxicillin or keflex continuously for 6 months while pregnant? iam 14 weeks pregnant with my second child and am having recurring uti's.which i also had with my first.i also have kidney reflux.my docter wants me on the drugs for the rest of my pregnancy. iam concerned about possible long term effects on myself and unborn baby.i have an appointment in a couple of days but wanted to have some information before i agree to this.

DeadWomanDriving replied: "I can tell you this learned from a birthing class uti are not the greatest thing for pregnancy and must be taking care of as far as meds obviously your dr knows your on the meds for this long is it possible you need a second opinion from a dr.. NOT ONLINE many meds are ok for some and not for others seriously go to a dr ask these questions..."

*Dreamer TTC#2* replied: "Having the actual infection can be more harmful to the baby then the meds. So in those cases your doctor will make a choice. Generally you will be put on a milder anti biotic that is safer to be on while pregnant. Discuss the concerns you have about this with your doctor to get the best info. Congrats on your pregnancy!"

baby girl on the way 11/26/08 replied: "well usually for UTI's they dont use Keflex or amoxicillin....those arent the usual drugs. Usually they use bactrim, macrobid, and there's a few more that are used specifically with UTI's. Im sure its safe if they want you to take them, however, being on them long term like that, there's a very high chance after a while they will not work, as your body just gets immune to the antibiotic itself."

clawdia1978 replied: "I'd be getting a second opinion, I don't think you can take keflex or amoxil for that long without your system becoming immune to it. If however the second doctor says the same as the first, then make sure you take Inner Health Plus, because being on those (especially for that long) will give you terrible thrush."

15 Weeks Preggo! replied: "That is a question only your Dr. should answer."

Anyone take antibiotics during pregnancy? I have had a UTI since i found out i was prego and i am now 19 weeks and it wont seem to go away. Im about to start antibiotics for the 4th time (Keflex). the doctors all say it wont affect the baby but im worried that taking so much of it may have some kind of effect. Has anyone taken a lot of antibiotics when pregnant? Or anyone know if taking too much is a problem?

leny replied: "it is fine if your doctor prescribes it to you i had 4 uti s with this pregnancy i had to take over 150 antibiotic pills in this entire pregnancy drink alot of water and try to avoid caffeine"

♥Preggy Spaghetti♥ replied: "For the 4th time...I think they better put you on something else...there are alot of stronger safe antiobiotics that you could take. I would rather the risk of something that may not be as safe as say keflex rather than expose the baby to it 4 times..."

tristens Mommy replied: "ive been taking antibiotics for a uti since i was 5 months, its now two weeks till my due date....as long as your doctor gave it to you dont be worried, not taking it can really hurt the baby a uti infection can be fatal to the fetus, stay on your meds and good luck and congrats"

sabrina replied: "im not sure about the anti biotics but i had a similar infection which i couldn't get rid of. In the end the doctor did a test to see what the best anti biotic were to solve the problem, turned out to be some thing they would not have normally considered."
