Which medicine will work better for Bulimia: Elavil or Prozac? I try not to go back again and again to councelors for my Bulimia. They don't do much but talk and talk and I am still sick. I am looking to buy myself the treatment: either Elavil or Prozac. Please, help me to choose the right one. Thanks so much.

How many of Zaniflex and Elavil combined does it take to overdose? I take the 4 mg Zaniflex and 50 mg Elavil when I am in severe pain and it is strong enough to knock me out for almost an entire day. How many of these two pills combined does it take to overdose? If 200 mg Seroquil were added, how many of the three would it take to have side effects of an overdose?

jess replied: "it is impossible to say. elavil is extremely dangerous. i took 3 of those once and was knocked out for a 2 days. i was kind of paralyzed. but if you took 3 it could kill you or hardly affect you at all. it can affect every single person differently. so i guess what im saying is that it isnt worth the risk. you dont know how your body will react. and do you really want to go through with something like that? i know from experience it doesnt help with the pain. i was so drugged up one time.... i remember we were at my grandmas... she had cancer... it was the last time i saw her before she died... and i was screwed up from the stupid pills. its never worth it. never."

Is it safe to have a couple of drinks while on Elavil? I take 25 mg of Elavil and I need a few drinks. The label doesn't say anything about not taking alcohol while on the medication but I want to be sure.

Tink replied: "As someone who has "been there, done that" and gotten my passport stamped on the trip, I surely don't recommend it... Tricyclic antidepressants can do funny things to alcohol metabolism. Whatever you do - make sure that you stay home, or that someone else will be driving. Because the funny way it messes with alcohol metabolism, is that you will think that you are fine, but you really aren't - much more so than usual - you'll think you'll be fine to drive when you really even shouldn't even be walking..."

nursienurse replied: "I take 50 MG of Elavil. I have an occasional glass of wine. Should I have more than 1 glass, I omit the Elavil. Alcohol increases the effects of alcohol."

Why does elavil or amitriptyline make you gain weight? Few people have stated they have a weight problem by taking this medication. Why is this? because you tend to eat too much? or something within the medication like chemicals or whatever they put in? thanks.

Lila replied: "Most antidepressants have an appetite increaser in them. It's not a deliberate addition. some don't have this appetite increaser in them and do not cause weight gain. With the antidepressants that increase your appetite and cause you to gain weight you can make a habit of telling yourself that you have had enough to eat. your mind not your stomach or need for food is doing this. Remember to say I am not hungry it is all in my mind and I don't need the extra food/calories. That can help"

what receptors and nerotransmitters does elavil work on? has anyone had a good experience with elavil?

Pick A Winner replied: "Elavil inhibits noradrenaline and serotonin. I didn't get any relief from this drug. My depression is treatment resistant though and the drug does work for some people. It caused me to get really sleepy and crave carbs and I remember downing cokes and eating candy bars at midnight. I would then pass out."

Has anyone taken elavil and noticed weight gain with it? My doc prescribed elavil for my migraines. Its the lowest dose - 10 mg - but I am worried about the side effects. Thank you very much for your help

People have more problems comming off of it then on: abrupt cessation of treatmentcan result in nausea, headache, and malaise. There are many clinically listed side effects. Marty Milkshake replied: "Elavil, a tricyclic antidepressant is considered "dirty" with respect to receptor affinity. Prior to the advent of the SSRIs, tricyclics were pretty much all we had to treat depression and related conditions. Elavil, like other tricyclics has a number of very serious adverse effects, e.g. potential arrythmia and so forth. Some psychiatrists still use Elavil as an adjunct to SSRIs but at relatively small doses, e.g. 25 mg. My personal opinion is that if you can avoid Elavil, for whatever indication, then you should as it's not a benign agent and it's hard to predict how any one individual will tolerate it. If, however, your physician feels that it's appropriate for you, then it's likely s/he has more knowledge of your particular history and other critical information so your physician's opinion should supercede anything I might suggest. In some cases, it can be used to control enuresis (urinary incontinence or loss of bladder control). Side effects include drowsiness, dizziness, dry mouth, headache, increased appetite, nausea, tireness or weakness, unpleasant taste, and weight gain."

does elavil start working on bad nerve pain immediately? the nerve from his hip down his leg is burning like fire constantly and is killing him. the percocet does not help him so the doctor is trying elavil and i know it is an antidepressant but is supposed to help with bad nerve pain. have you used it for that and if so, did it help at all? we are desperate here.

Sar replied: "it may take up to 4 weeks to see the full effects but he should start to see improvements within the first week (hopefully) if he still doesn't see improvement after the 4 weeks I would talk to the doctor"

Peaches (The Original) replied: "I use this for migraine prevention (it is not used as an antidepressant anymore because the therapeutic dose is so high and this med makes you very sleepy) It does not start working immediately. It is one of those medications that needs to build up a little bit in your system before you start to notice any positive changes. It can take 2-3 weeks to get the full effectiveness out of this med. It is very effective though. Most doctors prescribe this to be taken at night, right before bed because of the sleepiness side effect, but he will sleep quite well starting from day 1! He may also experience some increased appetite, which could result in weight gain if he does not adjust his activity level to account for the increase in calories. If you are aware of this side effect, and can not increase the physical activity, then it becomes very important to watch what you eat. I was also advised not to eat grapefruit or drink grapefruit juice while taking this medication because it can cause the medication to metabolize slower, so there is a chance that too much could end up in his system."

i have insominia and depression and my problem now is getting some sleep and my doctor gave me elavil? and ambien but the ambien is not working ... i had previously been on ativan and rozerem but rozerem doesnt work anymore.. does anyone know if it would be safe to take a half tab of ativan with elavil so i can get some sleep ?

darren s replied: "OK this may sound silly but trust me its true. How much do you work out? Do you work out at all? Are you physically active? What are you eating? I ask these because I too had this problem. I got involved in an exercise program 5 days a week. I changed what I eat to eat better less sweets and crap. I then got more active with my kids like riding bikes, motorcycles, playing and walking the dog. My depression or selfcenteredness left and I sleep like a log. I am happier and my family is too."
