For anyone who has taken Effexor XR ... Does it help, what are some side effects ? I was on Zoloft but stopped because I could not deal with the side effects. So my psychiatrist prescribed Effexor XR, Remeron and Seroquel for me. What are some side effects of the Effexor XR and what is the average dose and does it help ?

Billie replied: "Not professional but all the same can help. Just type ''side effects to Effexor XR'' on Google or some-other search line and plenty of results will come up for you to read into. And remember if you can't take one medicine then there are plenty of others the doctors can use. Good Luck"

sngree01 replied: "My brother takes Effexor XR and it has helped him tremendously. I also take it, and it has helped me, but I am less emotional than I would prefer. Emotional and relative connections are more difficult. I tend to live more on the surface than in the deeper parts of life, a huge change for me. I would research Effexor before you begin. Please. I cannot quit the medicine because of withdraw symptoms, and have read that some people have claimed that the symptoms may never disappear. Withdraw symptoms I have experienced: Dizzy, head tremors nausea and vomiting headaches/migraines flashes of light in eye vision severe depression and suicidal thoughts But, medicines react differently with different body chemistries. It may help you, it may not. You may not experience even one of the symptoms I listed above, or you may have different symptoms. I always say, before you take the medicine, you should try a more natural way of relieving depression, the main form being exercise. A nutritious diet, daily recreational activities, and a regular sleeping schedule (no 3rd shifts) are also important. Then there are self-help books that help you to train yourself to think more positively about specifics and life in general. I can't stress enough how important it is for you to do the research on your own - don't trust doctors. Best of luck to you!"

Simon W replied: "Effexor is a very good antidepressant, I used to take 75mg a day but it made me feel faint and dizzy so I had to come off it. Effexor can have horible withdrawal symptoms if you take it for a long time."

vajamie replied: "I started out on Zoloft too but I didn't feel it was working anymore. After a long trial and error with other meds, I'm now on Effexor XR. I've been on it for over a year. I haven't experienced any side effects on it. And it seems to work well with my other meds. But everyone is different. All I can promise you is that it's not a med to fear (side effects). Good luck and don't give up!"

How can I get my panic attacks under control? I have panic attacks whenever I attend a big event such as funerals and graduations.I've been on meds for 3 years..I suffer from GAD,OCD,major depression and panic attacks.I was doing better but it seems that now that I've gotten use to these meds , the symptoms are starting to get worse again. I take Effexor Xr,Abilify,Remeron, and Ativan...Can someone please give me some advice on what to do? (Thanks)

kbillecre8 replied: "Natural remedies or homeopathic tinctures can take the place of regular drugs a lot of the time. I go to a naturophatic doctor who also does work in chinese herbal medicine. I know a lot of people think its all new age crap, but it honestly saved me from chronic stomach and GI pain that was related to anxiety. I really think its worth looking into, especially if western medicine isn't working out anymore. btw, I'm not a crazy hippie, I'm a 19 year old female who tried it as a last desperate attempt and it worked."

Jody replied: "I had to increase my Effexor at 3 and 6 years. I went from 75mg to 150 mg to 300mg/day. 600mg is the maximum recommended dosage. I don't know about your other meds. I never took any of them. I know almost all the SSRI's "poop out" after a time, they're notorious for it. I just pray my effexor doesn't. It's the best medicine I found for me. Good luck."

La Lulu replied: "Jody is right. ADs do usually poop out eventually. Please consider talking to your doctor about this. I used to be on Zoloft (12 years!) and it pooped out. Now I'm on Paxil. Something that I've found that's helpful with my anxy feelings (I have GAD) is the amino acid Taurine. I take 1000 mg. on an empty stomach. I take more if needed. Please read this info at the link I've inserted: The books by Dr. Claire Weeks are very helpful as well. You can find 'em cheap on ebay. Take care!"

Charles replied: "I'd say the only "real" solution is to try to "grab the bull by the horns", rather than to try to evade the problem by use of medications etc. The way that worked for me, back when I was having some serious problems with depression, anxiety and panic attacks, was to start looking at the problem with a new perspective. I stopped my medications (not all at once, but rather gradually) and started to force myself into some habits that I had not had before. I started running early every morning before having a nice big breakfast. I started fly fishing and various other hobbies, all to keep myself occupied. While I was doing all this I started to try to divert my previous fear for my panic attacks into a more... Sort of difficult to explain, but I started to look upon it as "with the eyes of a scientist", if that makes any sense at all. When before the mere thought of my depression had sparked new fear and thus more depression, I now tried to turn that spiral into a positive spiral. This, coupled with all of my new "forced" habits, became the motivating force that in the end made me whole again."

shaye replied: "I don't know if this will be helpful, but for starts I know what you're going through. I've suffered from panic attacks for the past 12 years. Meds didn't control it enough, so I had to learn to control it myself. I do certain things when i'm anxious that really help me stay calm. You can take a hot bath & just focus on the water around you, you can try taking a ton of lotion then rubbing it into your hands really slow & focus on the way it smooths into your skin. You can try focusing on your breathing (slowly in through the mouth, slowly out through the nose). Also, when i'm in public & this it happens, I play games in my head. It sounds funny, but works. I will count things I see. Red cars, people wearing the color black, etc... or you can play a mind game where you take each letter of the alphabet & have to name something that starts with that letter (movies, music, you can do it with anything.) Try to focus on anything other than what you're feeling. Listen to music, go for a walk, anything. If you find yourself in a full blown panic attack, you can sit down in a chair, put your heads between your knees & just breathe. Or breathe into a paper bag. It's hard to learn to control them, but you will find a way to control your panic attacks that works for you. It just takes time. Good luck, I hope this helps you a little! Give these things a chance to work, try them!"

Regina (SOC) replied: "So many people breathe thru only the upper part of their lungs, and this makes panic and anxiety worse. To see for yourself, lie flat on your back on your bed and place one hand on your tummy. As you breathe, note if your tummy rises and falls with each breath. If it does NOT rise and fall with each breath, then you are not breathing thru the bottom of your lungs, which is incorrect. Train yourself to breathe so that your hand rises and falls with each breath. As you practice this, over and over, you will be learning correct breathing, which will be beneficial to your entire body. It will also help to stop the panic attacks. You need to practice this all the time, until it becomes automatic. You can even practice doing this while riding in a car, sitting at a desk, or whatever. Best wishes to you, my dear. 3"

Robert J replied: "take very deep breathes eventually it will become 2nd nature"

I stopped taking Remeron known as Mirtazapine. I'm constantly can't stop thinking about Food? I switched off from Effexor XR to Remeron. I couldn't handle what it's doing to me. I constantly can't stop thinking about FOOD. It's all about food now and I'm extremely paranoid. This past couple days it's been really crazy and hectic for me. I think I'm gaining so much weight. I used to be 146lbs before. After, I was diagnosed with a Depression Disorder, I've been on different kinds of depression medications. It did not work on me though, but it made me loose a lot of weight. I was 111lbs before I was introduced with Remeron for depression and sleeping aid. I'm paranoid to what's doing to me. My belly looks extremely fat from eating so much. I went back in taking Paxil because I had a few from before. My doctor doesn't know. I'm not intending in telling her about it. It's 10:53PM at night. It's driving me crazy because I don't want to go outside and by some food. I don't wanna eat because I'm scared be fat again. P.S. I'm not using the medications for loosing weight. My question is: Is there any other Depression medication and Sleep Aid that doesn't make me gain weight? Please No Tylenol PM.

thesongfairy replied: "You need to call your doctor immediately and ask them to refer you to another doctor. When they ask why tell them you want a doctor who cares about your health and who is competent. Tell them the medication isn't working and is causing you other problems. It could be the dosage isn't right. There are many other medications you can take and sometimes it takes a while before you find one that fits. Always read about the side effects so you know what to expect. Sometimes if you stay on the medication the side effects go away. Do not give up on yourself. Keep us posted as to how you are doing. 8~)"

What are the differences between Seroquel and seroquel XR? I just got switched from seroquel 400mg to seroquel XR 400 mg. I also take Effexor 150 mg and remeron 30 mg all before bed. I just want to know what the difference is I am not sure I understand.

City Buddha replied: "Seroquel and Seroquel XR are the same product but the XR is time released over a 24 hour period. I would imagine it also spreads the sleepiness over 24 hours as well. I am on 325mg and looking to increase it to 400mg. At times during the day I find myself in a fog. I also feel addicted to this product in a few ways. I've been on Seroquel for 4 years, slowly increasing the dosage due to sleepy side effects. It takes months for the level of dosage to work properly so be patient."

A question about anti depressants, please help? I am 22 and I am pretty regular regarding my period. I get it at the same time each month and now it's a week late. I've been taking Effexor XR and Remeron and was wondering if it can affect my period ? It hasn't been over a week late in years. And there is no way that I am pregnant. And the Effexor XR and Remeron is giving me horrible stomach pains but still no period. Is this normal ?

JIM O replied: "anti depressants don't work"

Kayla N replied: "http://chealth.canoe.ca/drug_info_details.asp?channel_id=0&relation_id=0&brand_name_id=1504&page_no=2#AdverseEffects this website says that the remeron will ause menstral difficulties and that if they happen to consult your doctor. as your doctor and see what he says. doesnt hurt to ask:) God Bless:)"

I overdosed on medication and the hospital said my heart rate was too fast? I attempted suicide recently by overdosing on a couple different medications. Effexor XR, Clonazepam and Remeron. The hospital said my heart rate should of been about 70.. I am 23 years old.. But my heart rate was about 165. I was on a heart monitor for two days and had numerous echocardiograms done. Is 165 really fast ? Why were they so worried

Jessica replied: "Might be because you can have a stroke or heart attack. Lighten up on the meds trust me life sucks just as much for everyone else as it does for you."

Courtney replied: "If your heart was working over double it's regular pace, if it had gone much faster, you would of flatlined! You heart can only do so much for you, To go that fast, it's not getting fully oxiginated blood round your body plus, it will tire itself out and just stop. It's very dangerous to have a heart rate that fast and it's a good thing you ended up in hospital, I'm so sorry for your pain to feel the only way out is suicide, but if you ever need someone to talk to, you can send me an email. sometimes it's easier talking to a stranger than it is to talk to the closest people in your life. I hope everything gets better for you, Best of luck and take care"

DFLy replied: "165bpm is a very fast resting heart rate which was probably why they were worried. My resting rate is only about 65 and I'm 30 years old. My heart rate only goes over 165 when I'm doing fairly intensive exercise. I only hope that if you no longer want to be dead that you haven't ruined your health by taking those pills..."

Ron Brgundy replied: "Wow you are lucky. They were worried because your heart could give out. I was dating a girl who overdosed on several drugs vicodin xanax and a bunch of others. She lost %40 of her brain and cannot move and can only say a few words. She was on life support being kept alive by machines for almost 3 weeks during which time the doctors told her mom she would be a vegetable and they need to pull the plug. Her heart rate hit 165 or higher numerous times. I was there in the hospital a lot. It was very hard. Her mother told me she was going to pull the plug and I went to tell her how sorry I was and I put my head down against hers. I told her I'm so sorry and my tears came down like sand in an hour glass. I told her if she could get through this I would always be part of her life. A few days later she stabilized and came out of it but what she has endured then and since then I can't really express in words it was like witnessing a small taste of what hell will be like for people who do not clean up their act. I talked to her yesterday and her mom sees her everyday. She has a dog and a cat which is a big help. She cannot move and has to have people change her diaper and wipe her ass. She is fairly happy given the situation. I would never wish this on you or anyone. I am hoping you will learn from this and never go to those ways again."

General Anxitey Disorder? Tim S replied: "Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) is often recommended. You can also buy books based on CBT"

maat13101 replied: "You need to learn meditation or yoga. I used to be a way anxious person (and still am sometimes) but I learned to calm my mind through relaxation techniques and over time, I chilled out. I also smoke weed every now and again for other medical reasons, but that helps to calm you as well."

stressed and hypertensive replied: "Are you being seen by a Psychologist or Psychiatrist. You need some continuing therapy so that the person you are seeing can continuously monitor your medication. H. Pylori is the bacteria that causes ulcers."

mathw01 replied: "I know what your talking about bro. I to am affected, but not on your caliber. I take 20mg of Celexa, and I feel better than ever. I am 32 yrs old and this all started about 7 months ago. I have cut out alcohol completely which has been hard, I exercise like a madman and I eat healthy. I see a therapist bi-weekly and try every day to make my life better. I do have bad days but who doesn't huh. I have stayed away from Xanax because of it's rebound effect(I used it quite liberally in my partying days, go figure) You have to work hard on this thing, but it is treatable. I'm sorry you have to go through this bro. I also find it unhealthy to be on these sites to much, others afflictions can manifest themselves on you. It's time to focus on yourself and you only."

Rockford replied: "One on One will not help you. Ypu've been alone enough. You will greatly benefit from finding a support group from guys your age who have GAD. Seeing other guywho you think look all cool, but are also so f*cuked up will really encourage you. I suggest you ask your doctor to send you to your local university to tthe mood disorders clinic too. They might have a GAD program. If there is a 6 month waiting list, sign up anyways. The universities specialize in new research. Also, your GAD may be part of another undiagnosed mental illness. Always keep that in mind. I have/had/have GAD. Its difficult. It comes and goes. I quit university twice because of it. My advice to you is take one or two courses and just get used to your surroundings. If you take one course and make it though, then take two the next time, etc. Whatever, you do, don't go there and take five. Take it slow."

mia replied: "I have GAD and take xanax only when I feel i can not absolutely stand the situation. This means i face my anxiety as much as i possibly can because life will always be full of anxious moments. I was also on paxil, Zoloft tried celexa and lexapro. I also see a therapist once a week because I have a phobia. My therapist is a psychologist who specializes in phobic and anxiety disorders. He has helped me a great deal through behavioral therapy. I am not on any SSRI's. Only the xanax lowest dose possible split in half. I can't remember the last time i took one. It took me years to get to this point. Meds can be helpful but, i believe, only in combination with therapy. My therapist helped me get to the source of my anxiety and the meds were only to help me out during hard times. Remember, your anxiety will not kill you although it can feel like it could and it severely interferes with your life. It is difficult to get a grip on yourself when your are in the middle of experiencing anxiety but through behavioral therapy you can learn to separate each physical sensation and face each one so when you experience them you won't feel any discomfort. You will also learn what situations cause your anxiety the most, what false beliefs you have and if any superstitious thinking you may have. You can always e-mail me if you would like to know more on how my doctor has helped me."

Please help..I just started Remeron( Mirtazapine) 30MG yesterday? I was switched on Remeron (Mirtazapine) 30MG from Effexor XR. I took my first Remeron yesterday and I took one today. For some reasons why was my eyes twitching, felt really dizzy, felt really sleepy and I couldn't sleep because my body was tired but my mind was still functioning, It made me ate alot and made me throw up. I felt really hungry like i never felt before, when my eyes were close i felt like there was this white clear stuff coming through all over my body. it's hard to explain. i'm sorry. then I was having this weird dreams. Please help

Diane replied: "switching medications or starting a new medication can cause a wide variety of side effects. Contact your psychiatrist and let them know what you are experiencing. They may take you off of it and put you on something else. Psychopharmacology is all about trial and error, so let your doctor know as soon as possible."

jastalhendrix replied: "You are supposed to be weened off of Effexor. My dad takes it and when they tried to change his meds on him he had alot of the same stuff happen to him. I would suggest giving it at least 3-5 days to let your body adjust if you are still having problems go back to your doc and tell him. You do have to realize though that it does take time for your body to adjust in any situation with those kinds of meds."

rgriffis68 replied: "Both of those drugs are powerful. I have taken both before. Remeron made me sleep like crazy. I couldn't tolerate Effexor, and Remeron didn't help the depression. Sounds like you have some Remeron side-effects but also some Effexor withdrawal. That sounds like a difficult mid-stream horse change. Isn't experimenting with meds fun? Seriously, best of luck."

rose replied: "I was in your sitiuation before. The psychiatrist prescribed me lithium, resperdal & rivotril. Day by day I felt sleepy but can't sleep, tired, bored, disturbed with a lot of things coming inside my mind. I became ineffective in my work. Thank God I was able to overcome that situation in my life. What I did is, I stop taking all my medication & I didn't anymore visit my psychiatrist. I avoid stress & everyday i set time to relax & allow myself to be happy. Now, Im living a normal life. God is really good..."

justice_for_derry replied: "Remeron can cause weight gain and increased appetite but does not usually cause an upset stomach or vomitting. It does cause drowsiness and some lightheadedness and/or dizziness. The clear white stuff coming through your body (as you describe it,) the weird dreams, nausea/vomitting, the eyes twitching and the mind functioning while you are tired are all side effects/withdrawal effects of Effexor XR. If your doctor took you off the medication without taking you down on the medication over a period of several days (or a couple weeks) than s/he made a very poor professional choice. Even the manufacturer recommends: "Discontinuation of Treatment with Effexor XR Discontinuation symptoms have been systematically evaluated in patients taking venlafaxine, to include prospective analyses of clinical trials in Generalized Anxiety Disorder and retrospective surveys of trials in major depressive disorder, and Social Anxiety Disorder. Abrupt discontinuation or dose reduction of venlafaxine at various doses has been found to be associated with the appearance of new symptoms, the frequency of which increased with increased dose level and with longer duration of treatment. Reported symptoms include agitation, anorexia, anxiety, confusion, impaired coordination and balance, diarrhea, dizziness, dry mouth, dysphoric mood, fasciculation, fatigue, headaches, hypomania, insomnia, nausea, nervousness, nightmares, sensory disturbances (including shock-like electrical sensations), somnolence, sweating, tremor, vertigo, and vomiting. During marketing of Effexor XR, other SNRIs (Serotonin and Norepinephrine Reuptake Inhibitors), and SSRIs (Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors), there have been spontaneous reports of adverse events occurring upon discontinuation of these drugs, particularly when abrupt, including the following: dysphoric mood, irritability, agitation, dizziness, sensory disturbances (e.g. paresthesias such as electric shock sensations), anxiety, confusion, headache, lethargy, emotional lability, insomnia, hypomania, tinnitus, and seizures. While these events are generally self-limiting, there have been reports of serious discontinuation symptoms. Patients should be monitored for these symptoms when discontinuing treatment with Effexor XR. A gradual reduction in the dose rather than abrupt cessation is recommended whenever possible. If intolerable symptoms occur following a decrease in the dose or upon discontinuation of treatment, then resuming the previously prescribed dose may be considered. Subsequently, the physician may continue decreasing the dose but at a more gradual rate (see DOSAGE AND ADMINISTRATION). Discontinuing Effexor XR Symptoms associated with discontinuation of Effexor XR, other SNRIs, and SSRIs, have been reported (see PRECAUTIONS). Patients should be monitored for these symptoms when discontinuing treatment. A gradual reduction in the dose rather than abrupt cessation is recommended whenever possible. If intolerable symptoms occur following a decrease in the dose or upon discontinuation of treatment, then resuming the previously prescribed dose may be considered. Subsequently, the physician may continue decreasing the dose but at a more gradual rate. In clinical trials with Effexor XR, tapering was achieved by reducing the daily dose by 75 mg at 1 week intervals. Individualization of tapering may be necessary." (The above is from the insert that would come with the medication.) So, your doctor should have taken you off slowly from the Effexor while at the same time putting you on Remeron and building it up in your system. This way, by the time the Effexor was out of your system the Remeron would have been ready to do the job. Now, you are in the place where the Effexor is ending but the Remeron has to build up to a therapeutic level for it to be worthwhile. Not the best choice. Hope things improve -- if not call your doc and ask about going back on the Effexor so you can be properly weaned off it."

Mental Health / Disability? When I was 16 I was Diagnosed with Bipolar & Agoraphobia and spent some time in a mental hospital for an suicide attempt. I've been on many medications: Zoloft, Paxil CR, Effexor XR, Remeron, Lexapro (those are just the one's I can recall) This was all four years ago, I am now 20 and now that I am an adult I have found it nearly impossible to be in a working environment with my mental illness. I have tried, I did get a job for a short period of time but had to stop myself because I couldn't handle it. I was curious if I could be put on disability for my illness? And if so how would I go about doing that? Since my illness was when I was a minor must I go see a doctor as an adult and get his backing or what?

adopted1960 replied: "u can only get it if u hire a lawyer to fight for u"

redsnowykitten replied: "Ive tried myself 3 times and been denied.I now have a lawyer. The thing is alot has to do with where you live. Here in florida unfortunately unless youve gone postal Florida does not recognize bi-polar or depression as a disability. where as in NC where Im from you can easily get mental illness disability. I would advise you to get a lawyer because they can file all the right papers and ask all the right questions. good luck to you!"

my4dogs replied: "I think you can be referred for an evaluation from your M.D. There can be one done through your local Mental Health Clinic. If you feel suicidal go to the Er they can request an evaluation. You maybe able to get your records from your past hospital stay and the Doctor who treated you, then you can use these when you do see your MD or therapist. Go to your local Mental Health Clinic and ask for appt. to be evaluated and have your records sent to them or bring them with you, always make copies, keep the originals. It may take time to get disability but if you are not feeling good and have problems on the job etc. probably you are eligible. Call your local SS office ask questions. Find someone you trust and will be willing to go with you for emotional support. Best of Luck! There is not very much money to live on, it will not be easyfor you. If you need to be on a new medicine be sure they start you on a small dose and then work it to a higher dose if needed. Make sure you have a good support system. Look up NAMI,"

SotiCoto replied: "Depends what country you're in.... obviously. Here in Britain they would advise you to try and find a job you were capable of doing.... but if you were tested and found to be incapable of holding any job then yes, you probably could get put on disability benefits..."

Zelda replied: "You say your illness was when you were a minor and have been on medications. As past tense, as in you are not now? Then no, you don't qualify for SSI at the moment. Go to its website and read and learn who qualifies for SSI and who doesn't."

Alicia F replied: "I was the same way you are. I start having depression at 13 or so. The longest job I ever held was 6 months. Then I went on disability (at 23). You need to be under a doctor's care and NOT working at all when you apply. If you can get a doctor to say that your health is to the point to where can't hold a job for any length of time, you should be able to get it. It may take several years but you should (took me 3years). I would suggest you hire a lawyer..if they don't think you can get it,,they won't take your case because they don't get paid. you can try to do it without a lawyer but most people I know had a lawyer. They ask you a lot of questions and if you answer one wrong..it affects your entire case.I wish you the best. Also know you will get backpay from the day you applied for it..even if you are turned down 1 or 2 times first. (and most people are..they want to close the case so they don't have to pay)"

lolasmommy replied: "I think if you can go through all of these steps to get disability and possibly wait for years and keep all of your documentation in order, then you can hold a job. Work to cope and become a functional member of society not the opposite!"

mary_h56304 replied: "My sister did. It took her 2 years and in the state of Minnesota she had to get a letter of recommendation for disability from 2 healthcare professionals. When it was finally approved they paid her back pay from those 2 years she spent waiting."

Am I taking too much medications and will it be overdose? ADULTS ANSWER ONLY!? I've been on so many Depression medications you can think of and none of them doesn't work. I fired my old doctor and my new doctor because they are self-centered. I have a tons of quantities with the medications that I never get to use. Come on, you need to be on a steady STEADY combination of meds for at least 2 months before you start accusing a doctor for being self-centered and throw away that medicine.. i know how that feels, believe me. Remeron is not for day.. very interesting on why you were prescribed that for DEPRESSION.. it is a new SLEEP-AID.. Doctors see your kind all the time and have a pretty standard way of thinking and what to do about it, so thats why it may seem they dont care too much. Its also sounds to me that you are hoarding medications which is almost always a dangerous situation. I hope that you are seeing a psychiatric to help teach you how to manage your behavior when you are symptomatic. You need help now, and you need to check into a mobile crisis center."

Yup Yup replied: "You really shouldn't keep taking your meds like this. I know. I used to take too many pills too. Then it turned into me needing them and popping them like tic tacs! You don't wanna go there. I ended up passing out a few times. And I don't remember much of what happened during a few times since I was always taking different amounts and different pills the reaction was always different. You should talk to your doctor about this before it gets to serious or your OD."

wisy replied: "Taking these type of medicines effects brain differently. Some of them may give you energy, some of them stop the exessive energy. Also, they could have life threatening side effects. Because of this, you should contact your doctor first, he/she should decide about giving up or taking medicines not yourself. If you do that in your way, things get to worst. CALL YOUR DOCTOR."
