Questions and Answers
can you take cephalexin if ur allergic to penicillin? this source says you can but im allergic and wanna be sure >
James H replied: "yes"

daddyrx replied: "Depending on what kind of allergic reaction you get, yes and no. If you get an anaphylactic type reaction to penicillin, then cephalexin is definitely out of the question. With other types of reactions, you can. Most physicians won't take the risk and prescribe a cephalosporin for patients who are penicillin allergic. EDIT: 10% of the people allergic to penicillin will cross react with cephalosporins. As I said before, an anaphylactic reaction to penicillin precludes the use of cephalosporins."

Scientist VK replied: "That is absolutely fine. The only reason not to take cephalexin is if you have cephalosporin hypersensitivity"

sal1970 replied: "i beg to differ with daddyrx. i've known lots of doctors who have prescribed cephalosporins to patients allergic to penicillin without a problem. cross sensitivity to cephalosporins in patients sensitive to penicillin is estimated at 5-16% but is likely closer to 3-7%."

ckm1956 replied: "While I generally avoid Ancef in patients with PCN allergies, there's less than a 10% cross reactivity. That means that 90% of patients would be fine. Cephalexin is what's called a 1st generation cephalosporin. There's 2nd, 3rd, and 4th generations as well. The "higher" generations have even less cross reactivity."

Am I allergic to penicillin too? I just found out that I have an allergy to Cephalexin (antibiotic). People with allergies to penicillin are also allergic to Cephalexin, but I want to know if the reverse is also true. My sis and dau both are allergic to penicillin, but I myself have never had a reaction to penicillin. I've also had Cephalexin before and never had a reaction to that too. Just got out of the ER today. Had to get an EPI shot, Benadryl through the IV, and a steroid. I'm sporting a major poison ivy rash and some of the blisters popped and got infected. I was having problems breathing, throat closing up, my tongue swelled, had a taste like paint in my mouth and my rash turned into this major ugly, swollen, angry, beet-red/purplish color. All but the rash itself cleared up in an hour or two at the ER. Now on a steroid for the poison ivy rash and off the antibiotics. I've Googled but cannot find an answer to my question: If someone is allergic to Cephalexin, are they now alleric to penicillin too? Thanks!

Army mom replied: "Wow, you really had a rough time of it. Cephalosporins are chemically related to Penicillin, but are not exactly the same. I am allergic to penicillin, but can take Cephalaxin cautiously. Your reaction to the Cephalexin was pretty severe. I'd ask your doctor for testing for a penicillin allergy before I would risk taking it again."

Tom replied: "wow"

thewebster_123 replied: "You aren't necessarily allergic to both. I can take cephalosporins but not "-cillins" Because of the severity of your reaction I would also be very careful if you do need penicillin. (I would recommend never getting an injection of penicillin and making sure you are close to an emergency room if you would need to take the tablets). Unfortunately there is no test for drug allergies. You should certainly ask your physician for her/his opinion to whether or not you should avoid penicillin. Hope you're feeling better soon!"

SALLI58 replied: "Allergic reactions to penicillin antibiotics are common. Cephalosporins are other antibiotics that fight many of the same infections as penicillin. They may be an option for patients who are allergic to penicillin. However, cephalosporins and penicillins have similar chemical structures. Some patients who are allergic to penicillin are also allergic to cephalosporin, but information about the frequency of cephalosporin allergy in patients with penicillin allergy is limited. With some drugs, such as penicillin and cephalosporin, doctors can perform a "skin test" for allergic reactions by administering small amounts of the drug under the skin. However, rather than perform a skin test, many doctors simply avoid cephalosporin in patients with penicillin allergy."

Daniel F replied: "it is VERY probable - they have a similar chemical structure - i would suggest that you have a 'skin test' to determine which antibiotics you are allergic too"

I'm sick but allergic to Anti-Biotics, what can I take ? I am extremely allergic to Penicillin and Cephalexin. What synthetic antibiotics can I take? I have a head cold which is moving to my chest.Currently coughing and congested, sore ears and throat. I'm very prone to Bronchitis.

JAMES P replied: "I wish you would have included why you are sick like the flu, congestion, sinuses infected. There may be something you can do without any antibiotics. You could probably take a dose pack of Erythromycin. My daughter-in-law takes it because she is allergic to penicillin. Your Doctor should know what to prescibe, if you have to go to the Doctor's Office. There are some home remedy's, so if you could take the time and add where you are sick may help. OK. For the sore throat, you can gargle with salt water, about 8 ounces of warm water in a glass and just shake about five times, some salt from the salt shaker, sttir and gargle. This will only help with the pain. For an infected throat, same amount of warm water, add a tablespoon of Heinz Apple Cider Vinegar, stir an gargle til it's gone. Even after about say the third gargle, swallot it. This will kill any germs that breaks loose and travels farther down. You should do these two things seperately 3 times a day. For the congested sinus, place a pan of water on the stove, bring it to a boil and let boil for at least two minuites or a minute and a half. During this time, using the salt shaker, shake in about 10 times and stir. Use a medium size pan. Make that at least 10 times or twelve. Turn off the heat, and steam will begin to rise. Lean down, not so close you get burned, just low enough to inhale the steam first through your nostrils, mouth closed. When you exhale, straighten up and blow out because if you stay down next to the pan, you'll blow the steam in all directions and have to wait until it is one solid mass again. Then breathe deeply into both the nostrils and mouth to get into the lungs and sinuses. Have some tissues handy, because you will be blowing your nose and coughing up more flem. Do this also three times a day. You have to keep that mucus loose so this will help that part. At night, now this is what I do, it smells, but if it works, who cares. I rub across my forehead, along the temples, down from my throat's adams apple down the center of my chest, and db a small amount just below the nostril openings. Cover up and go to sleep. In the morning take a warm to slightly hot shower and more mucs will come up. Zinc is good to fight colds, they even make a zinc tablet especially for that. Feel along beneath your jaw bone to see if those glands are swollen. If they are, you can but at a Pharmacy what they call Iodex. It looks like black grese. You rub that on the glands, wrap something around your neck like an old scarf and leave it covered. It is basically used to draw boils, but it also draws infections from the glands. Get yourself some Lipton Chicken Noodle Cup Of Soup and drink that several times a day. If you have a chest cold, you break it up with hot chicken soup. Drink plenty of liquids to keep the throat moist and in a couple of days, you should feel much better. I certainly hope so Parisy. Best to you and good luck young one."

Purpleflower replied: "Try Echnicea (I might be spelling it wrong). People take it during this time of year, it helps to boost the immune system. Also take lots of vitamin C, drink lots of fluids and try to get a lot of rest so you're not rundown."

Cephalexin Allergic reaction help!!? So last week i had a high fever and went to the emergency room, i was there for about 2 hours and i was asked if i was allergic to any medications and i said yeah penicillin to the nurse& doctor. and the doctor prescribed me Cephalexin 500 mg i went to my pharmacy and was told by the pharmacist that it is really similar to penicillin... so i had the pharmacist call the physician and he said no its okaY he can take it, and ive been taken it for the past week and now i Got all These RED dots all over my body and they are really itchyy.. so i called the hospital today and they said they cant do anything about it and were really rude about it, so i told them im gonna file a lawsuit against there ass and thats when they took it more seriously but still didnt help what should i do ? im really itchy btw the healthcare system in the U.S. suckss balls! im thinking about moving to canada but any advice will be appreciated! thanks

J B replied: "They did nothing wrong. Anyone with a penicillin allergy has the 'POTENTIAL for having an allergic reaction to Cephalexin. It does not mean it is going to happen and many people can take this med without any problems. In your case, you were sensitive to one antibiotic and now, you are sensitive to two - simple as that. You list PCN and Cephalexin as allergies. There are many more antibiotics that you can use and you may in the future have an allergic reaction to some of those too. Now for treatment, you need to stop the antibiotic and start taking some over the counter benadryl as directed on the box. It takes about 72 hours for an allergic reaction to clear your system so you need to take benadryl regularly until the dots are gone. Then, you need to make an appointment with your family physician and get another antibiotic or, you can go without and your condition will probably clear up either way since you have already had some antibiotics. The benadryl will take care of the itching and the red dots."

Strep B UTI and Penicillin Allergic? I have re-occuring UTIs that the lab results are showing are caused by Strep Group B. I was prescribed Bactrim..and then Cipro ( i have a penicillin allergy) by a Urologist who I believe is not up to date on Strep B because I'm still having symptoms and I am reading that these are not the choice drugs for Strep B infections. Should I be on Cephalexin? I called my gynocologist and she suggested it. I have a an appnt tomorrow with another urologist. Any advice? Please respond..my wedding is in 3 weeks and I'm desperate to get rid of this ! thank you. thank you. My gynocologist says there is still bacteria in my urine. Im going to see a new urologist today. Thank you for your help!!

bacchi_laureate replied: "Fortunately, virtually everything kills Group B strep. That said, I also usually think of cephalexin as being a pretty good choice for Group B strep. However, depending on your penicillin allergy, cephalexin may not be the best choice for you. If you had anaphlaxis from penicillin, many doctors stay away from the "cephalosporins" (class of drugs that cephalexin is in) because there is about a 10% crossover of drug allergy with penicillins and cephalosporins. If you only had a mild rash, most doctors would be ok with trying it. Although Bactrim is not spectacular against strep, Cipro should definitely do the trick. High concentrations of Cipro enter the urine, making it a favorite for complicated UTIs. If you're still having symptoms, it's possible it isn't a UTI anymore -- there may be yeast or bacterial vaginosis (brought on by stress and possibly antibiotic use) Depending on how often you're getting UTIs, you may want to discuss "post-coital" antibiotic prophylaxis with your gynecologist. Some women take a dose of an antibiotic after sex because they frequently get UTIs after sex. Might make for a more pleasant honeymoon."

Keflex (Cephalexin) does it hurt the liver? ? I have an infected ingrown toe, and the doctor prescribed me Keflex (500mg) and it says to take it 4 times a day for 10 days. I am worried about its effects on the liver and the colon as well after reading this: SIDE EFFECTS: The most common side effects of cephalexin are diarrhea, nausea, abdominal pain, vomiting, headaches, dizziness, skin rash, fever, abnormal liver tests and vaginitis. Individuals who are allergic to penicillin may also be allergic to cephalexin. Cephalexin, like almost all antibiotics, may cause mild or severe cases of pseudomembranous colitis, a mild to severe inflammation of the colon. Antibiotics, including cephalexin alter the normal flora of the colon and permit overgrowth of a bacterium called Clostridium difficile. Studies indicate that a toxin produced by Clostridium difficile is a primary cause of pseudomembranous colitis. Is 40 500MG pills of Keflex harmful long term? Is that the only way to get rid of the infection on my toe? Looking to heat hopefully from pharmacist, i'm going to call my primary physician (these pills were prescribed in urgent care) Thanks

quijibored replied: "Keflex is one of the safest of antibiotics. Besides treating simple infections like what may be going on in your toe Keflex is often used to prophylactically treat chronic staph skin infections, in which case the Keflex is taken for 3 months or more - usually with zero problems. The real risk of developing clostridium difficile is when the person has been on several strong broad spectrum antibiotics one after another and the person's colon has never had time to recover and allow beneficial bacteria to repopulate. You can reduce your risks for this happening by eating real live yogurt every day that you are taking antibiotics and also by taking acidolphilous or another good probiotic daily. If you are taking the Keflex for only ten days your real risk is any potential infection in your toe rather than worrying too much about developing CD."

What is cross-reactivity in antibiotics? I have been prescribed Cephalexin for a respiratory infection. I am allergic to penicillin. I read that there is a 10% cross-reactivity in patients with a penicillin allergy. Does this mean there is a 10% chance I am allergic to Cephalexin? Should I be okay?

T-Bone replied: "yes, that's exactly what it means. there's a 90% chance you will be OK."

Janine replied: "Just have benadryl handy should you have a reaction, ie itching, hives and if you have dificulty breathing, take the benadryl and call 911... If you arrive at the hospital in an ambulance, you get a bed faster..."

C-DuB replied: "what is ur definition of allergic? unless ur talkin about an anaphylactic shock type reaction i wouldnt be worried too much."
