Is Choraphor a safe alternative to Valtrex? even though its not been evaluated by the FDA? Its supposedly a topical thing that annihilates herpes sores and prevents new ones. Do you think its a scam?

Snout replied: "Yes, it's a scam. On their website they claim to cure herpes, but provide no evidence whatsoever to support that extraordinary claim. Given the claimed ingredients (a sulfur base, trace elements and St John's wort) it is unlikely the product has any therapeutic effect whatsoever on HSV infection, much less provide a "cure". I can't comment on whether it is likely to be safe or not. The use of testimonials is not evidence, and in fact is a red flag indicating a quack product, as is the lack of evaluation by the FDA. The $79 price tag for a small bottle of tincture of a common herb is also extremely high."

LINDSEY S replied: "To be honest with you, I would not trust any thing that is not FDA approved. There is no telling what side affects it could have or what it could do to you. Things like that advertised on the internet are usually scams. I'm sorry to tell you this but there is no cure on the market that will completely annihilate herpes, but they can do a good job at suppressing out breaks if you use them regularly. If you want a safer alternative try Lysine, it's a natural more antiviral."

Are there any alternatives to valtrex? I have a virus that I get in my throat (herpies like) and my doctor always gives me expensive valtrex, I would love to have a natural alternative.

Az R replied: "There's an older version of Valtrex called Aciclovir that's dirt cheap. The main disadvantage is that you have to take it more times a day than Valtrex, because it doesn't last as long. But unlike Valtrex, Aciclovir has been generic for a decade so and you can get it using couch change (assuming your couch collects 15-20 dollars each month, mine certainly does). There's nothing you could slap the vague and illdefined label of 'natural' on that will do much for any of the herpes viruses."

raisedbycoyotes replied: "The alternative that docs also know is to take L-Lysine. It works fine. It's in a vitamin store."

valtrex alternatives? ive just been diagnosed with both type 1 and 2 herpes. my doctor put me on a trial run of valtrex(10 days, two 1g tabs per day). the problem is its expensive, even with my insurance the cost was 50$ for 20 tabs. I'm a student and money is tight so the thought that i may need to be on daily therapy with this med brings up that i could either pay for food, or for valtrex. or would the best option be to wait until i am put on a daily regimen and go to mexico(a five hour drive, and i know a reliable pharmacy) and pick up as much as i can afford at the discount. Are there any alternatives to valtrex? i looked and saw that there is no generic for it but are there other meds that will do the same thing at a lower cost to me?

Lea replied: "Valtrex is the preferred drug for herpes outbreaks. Most anti-virals are still on patent. There is Acyclovir, but I don't think it works for herpes."
